There is an ancient story that there was a demon named Banasur who used to worship Bholenath. Banasura was a demon of the clan, but Bhaktaraja had faith in the Lord as he was of Prahlad’s lineage.

Once Banasura did severe penance to Lord Shiva Shambhu, which pleased Lord Bhole Nath, and asked Banasura to ask for a boon. Said that you will always remain in the form of this Shivling.

Then Bhole Nath was pleased and said that I will always sit in the form of this Shivling. Banasura was pleased and took the Shivling with him and worshiped it by sitting on a mountain named Amarkantak.
